Volume 185

My own spin on things

As curated by Miles Sargent

Drummer and Musical Director

Myles is a Drummer & Musical Director based in Brighton, UK.

After leaving his hometown in Cornwall to study music he now has the pleasure of working and touring with a great range of artists such as The Japanese House, Justin Jesso, Calum Scott, Mae Stephens, Cavetown as well as many more.

I’m currently out and about touring and drumming with the wonderful Japanese House! We’ve got a really busy and exciting year ahead, including playing Coachella. It’s such a lovely touring group and we have a lot of fun on and off the stage. The music is great and I have a lot of freedom to put my own spin on things; I’m really grateful to be a part of it! A recent highlight for me was our performance for NPR’s Tiny Desk. It was a lot of fun to really strip the songs back and play them in a very raw and exposing form, which was centred around an upright piano. Check it out if you fancy!

What's been keeping you grounded?

01 WHAT'S KEEPING ME GROUNDED

Touring can be such a bubble and eventually that bubble is going to burst when you come off the road (the post tour blues are real!). I’m on a little break between tours right now, so seeing family, friends, and catching up with people who I’ve not seen in months really helps pull things back into perspective. I’m also really enjoying getting out of my flat and working in my local coffee shop; it helps to break up the day, especially when you have no solid plans - Shoutout T @ Hove!

What are you into lately?

02 QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“The race is long and, in the end, it's only with yourself.”
—Baz Luhrmann, quoting Mary Schmich

WHAT IM ROCKIN'

The Shepherds Shirt in Rinsed Dark Navy Shipyard Canvas is my favourite at the moment. It goes with everything and it hardly spends any time in the wardrobe! I wear it with the Courier pant in the same wash, because you’ve gotta have the bottoms to match right!? And the thigh pocket is the best.

03 WHAT I'M DRINKING

Negroni or Topo Chico
Alcoholic? Oh, it has to be a classic Negroni - you really cant go wrong. Non-alcoholic, probably a Topo Chico, but we don’t see them too often here in the UK.

04 WHAT I'M UP TO, HEALTH-WISE

Taking a walk

I’m actually type 1 diabetic, so it’s important to keep on top of my heath, especially on the road where it’s easy to slip into bad sleeping and eating habits. As long as I’m eating well and keeping somewhat active, I’m happy. I’ve found that just taking a walk each day is great for both physical and mental health.

What are you drinking?

05 WHAT I'M READING

The Creative Act
I’ve never been much of a reader but my friend recently gifted me Rick Rubin's The Creative Act, so I’ve been slowly but surely sinking my teeth into that. Thanks, Billy!

06 WHAT I'M INTO LATELY

Live music

I don’t actually get to see much live music when I’m out on the road, so I’ve been trying to catch more shows recently. It’s a nice bonus when a friend from out of town is passing through! You get to catch up and see some amazing live music at the same time. My local record shop frequently puts on acoustic shows, so they’ve been fun to see from time to time.
