ON ART, LIFE, AND THE CUNNINGHAM WITH KAI DIAZ

As curated by

Kai Diaz

What's been keeping you grounded?

People watching with my camera loaded with film. Muay Thai training. Surfing when I can. My baby doggo, Harley. Cruising the coast in my car or moto.
Spending time making handprints in my dark room.

We sat down with CA-based photographer, art director, and designer himself—Kai Diaz.

Currently focused on publishing his first photo book, Kai’s creativity continues to inspire behind the camera for our latest piece, the Cunningham Coat in Double Dipped Organic Canvas.
Inspired by 19th-century chore jackets, the Cunningham Coat combines timeless utility with modern craftsmanship.

What are you into lately?

Lately, I've been focusing on a number of photography projects. My favorite one I'm working on right now is documenting the change that's happened/happening in Encinitas.
Also prepping for a cross-country drive to experience all the roads the USofA has to offer. I'll most likely make a documentation of it... and maybe make enough work for a book on my POV driving through American towns.

What are you reading/whose writing has inspired you lately?

Mostly photo books... currently digging into new releases from Shin Noguchi and Gary Winogrand.

What are you up to, or wish you were up to, health-wise?

Surfing always. But lately, a lot of martial arts... Muay Thai is such a beautiful art and culture. I like that the learning is never ending. Sharpening my photography on the streets.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

Don't know who said this but I have it printed on my wall for a daily reminder:

“a grateful state of mind will set one free from a toxic mentality of negativity, misery, and disempowerment.”
