Volume 177

A few sessions under my belt

Curated by Josh Dela Cruz

Actor

I'm Josh, a Film, Television, and Broadway actor, former Aladdin in Disney on Broadway's Aladdin, and the host of Nickelodeon's Emmy nominated, Blues Clues and You!

I've been a professional actor for close to 13 years now and learned that shows come and go. However, this time around instead of waiting for the next role, I'm starting my own production company so I can pursue projects I'm passionate about.

What's been keeping you grounded?

01 WHAT'S KEEPING ME GROUNDED

Jiu-Jitsu
I've been practicing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for some time now and was recently promoted to blue belt. As someone with ADHD, it's a great reminder for me that everything doesn't have to be perfect. Just show up, put the work in, and keep on going. The practice of getting up in the morning and physically working through the mental roadblocks that would normally be detrimental to my day is a gift. It's a practice I'm constantly trying to implement throughout my day as I build my company.

What are you into lately?

02 QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time.”

— Jack London

WHAT IM ROCKIN LATELY

WHAT I'M ROCKING LATELY The Shepherds Shirt is my go-to layer. It's utilitarian enough to wear when I'm working in the garage but has great details that make it a great option when going out. The Courier pant has everything I need: enough room to move around, well-placed pockets, and they're made in America. I have worn my Imperfects Shop Tee to bed... after wearing it all day. I know, I know... but it's insanely soft.

03 WHAT I'M DRINKING

Espresso Gin Martini
Normally, I'm not much of a cocktail person, but last year in Bangkok I had my first espresso gin martini. It's now my go-to when I'm out with friends. I think of it as the grown-up version of a "vodka Red Bull". When I'm home, my "go-to" is always Bushmills Black, neat.

04 WHAT I'M UP TO, HEALTH-WISE

96-hour water fast
After learning about the numerous health benefits (which include a 70% less chance of cancer, heart disease, and diabetes), I was inspired to do a 96-hour water fast. It was one of the most incredible experiences, seriously. By the end, I was filled with so much gratitude for my life, health, and my loved ones I was moved to tears, knowing I'm ready to meet any challenge head-on. Would I do it again? Probably not that long, but I am incorporating intermittent fasting into my day-to-day again.

05 WHAT I'M READING

The Art of Resilience by Ross Edgley
In his book, The Art of Resilience, Ross Edgley accounts his 157-day swim circumventing the United Kingdom while breaking down the strategies and science he used to strengthen his mind, body, and spirit all the way to the finish line. His sense of adventure and humor continue to inspire me every day.

06 WHAT I'M INTO LATELY

Cold Plunges
I finally gave in and started doing cold plunges! Not only do I find it invigorating, but it's taught me to importance of breathing. It seems so obvious, "Josh, of course, breathing is important!" But now that I've had a few sessions under my belt I've noticed how often my breath shallows whenever I'm stressed. Recognizing that and taking deliberate deep breaths has been so helpful in relieving stress and the muscular tension that inevitably follows. Who knew that it would take me 34 years and baths in ice-cold water to learn I haven't been breathing properly!
