HARD WORK IS THE TRUTH, AND TRUTH IS A VIRTUE

As curated by

Mike Lynch

Oh and BTW, by ‘we,’ I mean me and my squad! Which currently consists of a few really handy wood workers, my trusty electrician homie, the OG Full Time Imperf Squad, My WIFE, my two hands and this thing between my ears and inside my chest. The week went so fast, I stopped working on Sunday afternoon and realized “Holy shit, I need to get Ace man in the water and get home to clean and love on that little Lynch Squadron.” Here’s the point, when you are grinding with love and intention, you lose track of the days and sometimes the right view point but without fail, the madness comes to a screeching halt, the life marathon makes you pause, catch your breath and look around and in other words and as my beautiful wife likes to say, “The truth always comes out.”
I’m a New York native, living and playing soccer in Nashville, TN.

First of all, sorry I missed a week of LFE last week, not intentional, time is just absolutely flying.

Last week was heavy from a work load perspective; in the midst of building the store out, we’ve been re-designing the supply chain, prepping to land thousands of new units, having half the Team out sick and dealing with wild Toddlers, we hosted the Pal’s new film, Volcano Island (which is an epic piece of art btw), we put a bunch of rad new warehouse fans in, we cleaned 5 times a day because there is so much sawdust, we pitched the SEED+ raise deck twice more, we took on some mentorship, we looked in the mirror for a split second and grinned, we patted each other on the back.

Last Thursday, I realized I didn’t need to write an LFE for the week because my plate was too full. I realized that writing the LFE without full attention and good intention was going to be more of an offense than an achievement — attempting to pump it out so I could check it off the massive to do list was not the right approach to something I hold so scared. So I did the hard thing and checked myself before I wrecked myself. Moral of the story: Do the right thing even when it’s the hard thing! It’s ok to admit your plate is full and in most cases, catch your breath before your next move.

I had this football coach in high school who was incredible in a lot of ways and helped mould me into me; after we won our final championship and I was going off to college camp, he pulled me aside and told me something that changed me forever: “Lynch, when you go 99%, you play average and blend in but when you go 100%, you are unstoppable.” First of all, for any teenager to hear words like this from a trusted and admired leader in their life is simply put, special. Those words would catch me hot in my tracks for the next 18 years and constantly be the check and balance in my life as I swiftly sailed my way around chasing my goals. I am bringing this up aloud here because this is the stuff of life — the so called secrets we seek to ‘crack the code on,’ the best butter we can get for our mental toast — and it changed my life for the better and continues to.

Here’s my conjugation to share with the world, 18 years later: You are enough and you will always be enough if you are telling the truth to the person in the mirror looking back at you. All of our goals we set and chase are generally moot points on the universal road map if compared to our real basic human levels of need that actually promote the feeling of fulfillment. In my experience, I need love and attention to survive just like I need water and shelter to survive; when did having a balanced mindset and a loving environment become thriving and not part of our everyday survival?
The simplest things are the most powerful - there is still magic in feeling the wind at your back and listening to the waves come in and there is nothing wrong with pausing to enjoy them every once in a while, in fact, you should do it more often. Your goals in life will consistently change with you, you have to remember you are towing them, they are not towing you. Remind me to write that on a postcard as a note to self for the next time I’m heated and grinding so hard I can’t see straight!

Hard work is the truth and truth is hard work and truth is definitely a virtue worth achieving in life. Start with yourself and notice that if you are losing sleep for the wrong reasons, you’ve got some mirror gazing to do. To be great is to tap in and to know when to tap out, to be optimized and optimistic like Optimus Prime, of course. Find the tiny beauties in the little things and the days come easier with seemingly, more achievements. Please let this little note on a random Thursday be a reminder that goodness comes from goodness and when you are the most overwhelmed and the most tired, check in with your truth; it’s only okay to work your hardest when you are working truthfully.
Put your head down but keep your chin up.

POEM OF THE WEEK

Glaring back at me with a grin of affection and a freshly shaven face
They say 15 years younger without the weight of curls
A compliment unnecessary but welcome
Sifting through this world just trying to find place
Space for himself and the weight of the world
Chip on the shoulder finally disappeared
Dissipated with that negative energy that the haters held
Shout out to the homies who are wiling to drive the ball forward
Best things you achieved had nothing to do with the self but with Squad
Now I can finally see I

Shoutout Uncle Levi.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"Once you get that two way energy thing going, everyone benefits from it hugely.”
