ALL IN A LIFE'S WORK

As curated by

Michael Lynch

I’ve been to that exact lookout point on the River Cong a few times and it’s oddly peaceful - and while I don’t really consider myself a ‘Quiet Man,’ I have over time realized that I tend to find my peace in listening.

In other words, the world is noisy and when you quiet down for a bit, you start to hear things you most normally would not. This visual in my head of the Cong River paired with the narrator’s voice in that 50’s film just somehow does the classic life-magic-trick to me - where the world feels full of hope and opportunity, the sun comes out and the birds start chirping in your direction. It’s like a subconscious version of your mind telling you to slow down and breathe.

Well, I’ve been listening to my subconscious and it is centering me; I am sharing this with optimistic intentionality and ultimately, a take home message about the harmony that comes from weaving your dreams into your everyday reality. It’s like fiction cannot exist without non-fiction and that’s what makes the world continue to go around; in other words, your dream starts as fiction, a figment of your imagination but then you slowly form it into your reality and if you persist long-enough, your autobiography will be a non-fiction story about what you accomplished. Incredible isn’t it?

I’ve been very quiet on the Imperfects Mic lately, for those of you who do read LFE and follow our social story-tellings, it's been a quiet past 4-6 months in particular, not purposefully, just a natural part of chasing the big kahuna goals and trying to find ways to quiet all the noise.

Ultimately, it’s been a beast of a challenge to continue to make long-term decisions around the brand and try to find ways through the short term growing pains. The economic environment we currently live in is wildly challenging for companies who are working honestly and authentically, not cutting corners or cheating.

We fall into that category of well-made and soul-made so in particular, the supply and demand game has been absolutely impossible hence my quietness. We are constantly trying to find harmony between these two elements, supply and demand, so that we can do better and grow more peacefully but we make our product the resilient way and its a craftsmanship game for us - so it’s all in steady time.

And that really is at the heart of my message today, stay steady, stay authentic and listen to yourself and all of those sounds around you.

There's an old John Wayne Film called The Quiet Man that I think of often these days.

It’s a film set in a little town of Ireland called Cong and it takes place in 1952. It’s about an Irish Boxer who retires from his career in the States to go explore his home and find peace. I don’t particularly find the film riveting but there is this one line that I think of all the time and while I replay this line in my head, I picture myself standing on the River Cong in that same spot where John Wayne stood in the movie and these words spoken in the film flow out in the same rhythm of the river:

“Beware the quiet man. For while others speak, he watches. And while others act, he plans. And when they finally rest... he strikes.”
